Enterprise information systems produce, use and exchange structured
data. Putting it very simply, XML is a technology to organize structured
data in a text form that can be transmitted by variety of protocols
and read by variety of systems, even by humans.
Since XML documents are application-independent this makes
them a standard for data exchange between applications (B2B applications
are an example).
Another popular use of XML today is presentation
templates. An application may need to present information to a variety
of clients (web-browser, mobile phone etc.). Today's applications
generate XML data, which is then formatted by a template
to be displayed on a particular client.
Benefit of XML technology for the client is
ability to communicate with other systems, including other businesses.
Even if such need is not apparent today for a company, it may arise
in the future, and XML-enabled application ensures that investment
in software is not lost.
